CNBLUE on 18th and 19th December 2013 at Nippon Gaishi Hall (Nagoya, JAPAN)

© FNC Entertainment / TBS

Embarked for a new Japan tour, Arena Tour 2013 -ONE MORE TIME-, CNBLUE was travelling across the Land of the Rising Sun for two months, to rock five cities thanks to the songs from the last album, What turns you on?, released at the end of summer. Although the South Korean pop-rock band focused the main part of the year on his first world tour BLUE MOON, it was finally back to Japan, a country which is not an unknown land anymore since the debuts as an independent band in 2009. After successful performances in Saitama, Osaka and Hiroshima, CNBLUE had a stop at Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya on 18th and 19th of December 2013.

Despite the rain during the two days of live, people were greeted by the giant banners of the band, stringed up around the arena, and by some echoes of the rehearsal and sound check. Not far away, there was the long and big stand selling concert goods like T-shirts in various models, towels, lightsticks, exclusive bracelets designed by the bassist Jungshin, and many others. Tower Records also had his stand to give the opportunity to Boices to complete their collection. Indeed, we could find almost all the Japanese discography and all the issues of Live Magazine (Magazine featuring exclusives live photos).

Even if the rain didn't bring a cheerful mood, fans kept smiling and waited around Nippon Gaishi Hall in a friendly atmosphere. They were meeting together to discuss, share their previous experiences and exchange many personal goodies they made themselves. And when a foreign Boice was coming to attend the event, she was greeted warmly by the Japanese Boices, like a big family greets a new member. Because indeed, Boices from South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Europe... were here as FNC Entertainment proposed to the members of the Korean fanclub to get tickets (BOICE JAPAN fanclub is available for people living in Japan only). An audience including various nationalities and all generations which was joined by male fans, more and more numerous at every new tour.

At 5:30pm exactly (viva Japanese punctuality), the gates opened and everybody entered peacefully in the arena. Every seat were being occupied while Japan PV of the band were broadcasted on the widescreens (In My Head, Blind Love, One More Time, Lady), but also the trailer of the movie The Story of CNBLUE/NEVER STOP and the new DVD live BLUE MOON. Unlike the previous Arena Tour 2012 ~COME ON!!!~, there wasn't a extension stage. CNBLUE were going to perform on the large main stage only. However, the decor was extravagant: strange combined tiles in 3D got attention from people.

At 6:30pm, the hall became dark, the lightsticks switched on, creating the beautiful Blue Ocean, and the opening act began with N.Flying. Third male groupe of four members produced by FNC Entertainment and including Kwon Kwangjin who was by the past a member of CNBLUE, N.Flying doesn't make his official debuts in South Korea yet and is currently experimenting lives in Japan. The band followed CNBLUE during all the tour in order to share his music (despite a very short discography as the band just debuted independently in Japan) and increase his number of lives in Japan. Earlier, N.Flying also did the opening act of FTISLAND's Zepp Tour 2013 -REPLAY-.
Even if the flying boys didn't have many songs to play their performance was good and they set the audience in a good mood, despite they didn't have much space on stage because of the big instruments of the blue boys behind them. Short opening act but energetic and effective thanks to the songs Poker Face (cover of Lady Gaga's song), Bitter Sweet and BASKET (from the first single). Funny and communicative, especially the vocalist Seung Hyub and the drummer Jaehyun, N.Flying revealed good skills and seems to be a promising band. We are looking forward to see what CNBLUE's young brothers will be able to do in the future with more songs corresponding to their style.

Short intermission while staff was checking the instruments and at approximately 7:00pm, a sweet intro started and the members entered on stage at the same time blue and green light beams illuminated partially the hall. Yonghwa shouted a giant "NAGOYA!" and the band opened the show with romantic and melancholic ballad Blind Love. Surprisingly, it was a soft beginning featuring smooth ballads as Rain of Blessing followed quickly, and ultimately, this song was totally in accordance with the weather.

CNBLUE then accelerated the movement with more energetic and famous tracks, like voice. This kind of song brought a nostalgic flash back, at the moment the band was still at the beginning of its story and was performing in little live houses. But the past is the past, and the present is the present. That night, CNBLUE was standing in an arena with 10 000 people turning crazy. The boys played with still the same excitement and enthusiasm, even if members showed sometimes a tired face, especially the leader Yonghwa. We have to admit that last few months, the members didn't get some rest and had many concerts, tours, and other various activities. Particularly during the first day, the main vocalist had some difficulties to sing powerfully and show his funny and crazy attitude as he does usually. He was more expressive and in a better health the second day.

Despite these short moments of weakness, CNBLUE's members did their best and showed all their potential while the strange tiles' color was changing at every song; stage production simple but effective. The four boys are able to surprise their fans thanks to their live skills, better and better as time passes: presence and confidence, amazing and emotional vocals, great and powerful solos. The Japanese songs, originally very rock, are more impressive in live with guitar riffs more dominating. We could clearly hear Yonghwa's and Jonghyun's lightning-fast guitar solo. On the other hand, Jungshin's flexible bass and Minhyuk's wild beats make moving the crowd. During kimio, Yonghwa and Jungshin moved often on the stage, interacting with the audience, dancing in a sexy way and sending kisses. In the same time, Minhyuk played with full of energy and Jonghyun used his best weapon: his beautiful voice. We note that his voice is still bewitching, especially when he sings ballads. Blind Love and Rain of Blessing were just a preview of his vocal capacities. When the Burning Soul sang later in the night eclipse, the magnificence of his voice turned the hall in a magic atmosphere. There were lanterns on the stage and a night sky appeared on the screens, making the fans travelling in a wonderland.

When In My Head started, the atmosphere became very hot. Flames were spurting out on stage, making greatly increasing the temperature. Sure, CNBLUE was setting on fire the Nippon Gaishi Hall. But at CNBLUE's concerts, in Japan or elsewhere, there are also funny moments during the MC (where Jonghyun likes speak for long time). Impromptu acoustic song, Yonghwa making boxing with the camera at the middle of Wake Up (NOTE: the second day has been filmed and will be broadcasted on the Japanese TV channel TBS on January 26), Yonghwa asking to the ladies to scream, and after to the gentlemen. We saw at this moment that the boys were in minority but as expressive as the girls to scream the name of their favorite member (yes, gentlemen who screamed powerfully the name of Yonghwa, we all remember you)! But sorry gentlemen, the leader finally preferred ladies' voice.

If there is a negative point to mention, it would be the set list. Unfortunately, it missed some new songs from What turns you on?, like CHANGE that would have brought a party time as Have a good night and the ballad I can't believe that would have generated strong emotions. However, the audience enjoyed One More Time, Robot, introduced by Yonghwa's "TOP OF THE WORLD" and leaded by green laser beams, sometimes static, sometimes dynamic, or also Coffee Shop, from the Korean EP Re:BLUE. At the end of this song, each member did one after another a fascinating solo with their own instrument.

Regarding the ballads, always played at the middle of the concert to mark a sentimental part, Love Light was still on the set list and this time, Jungshin sang some parts, making ladies falling for him. There was Don't Care too, also played during Zepp Tour 2013 ~Lady~, led by an acoustic guitar with a careless tone. This song with simple and sophisticated melody left strong feelings that touched the crowd as Yonghwa was singing with sincerity.

After one hour and half, CNBLUE added the final part with I'm a Loner, I'm Sorry and Lady. Gathered around Minhyuk's drums, the musicians played the last tracks with full of energy to close perfectly the performance and then they left the stage.
The audience immediately claimed an encore and after few minutes, the members came back. The encore began with Get Away and its impressive guitar solo introduction added to the song since BLUE NIGHT concerts. Unlike the beginning of the live, the encore started madly and fans were still excited and rotated proudly their towels. This last part was different at each date. The first day, there was the famous L.O.V.E GIRL where Yonghwa said "みんなは僕たちのL.O.V.E GIRLS" ("You are all our L.O.V.E. GIRLS"). The second day was a bit longer as the band played LOVE, introduced by Yonghwa's amazing beat box, and then acapella samples of Hey You, feeling and also These days for fun. Jungshin endorsed again the vocalist status when he sang You've fallen for me, mixed to the chorus of Love Revolution.

CNBLUE closed each concert by sweet notes of Starlit Night. CNBLUE and Boices were singing together the chorus as Jonghyun, the author of this song, had always wanted, and clapped their hands, providing last warm sensation. The boys came at each side of the stage to thank and greet the audience and give as last present their towels, picks and drumsticks to the lucky people that were able to catch one, and finally they went to the backstage.

Although the stage production was simpler than Arena Tour 2012 ~COME ON!!!~, with less proximity and without special stage, CNBLUE's members were still able to share their feeling through their music and touch each person. Live house or arena, pyrotechnics or not, CNBLUE always has the particularity to offer exceptional performance. The bright lighting was flawless and eclectic and animated perfectly all songs.
CNBLUE performed the final of this tour not at Saitama Super Arena, but at Marine Messe Fukuoka on December 26. So, this second Arena Tour was completed with success and was a new challenge done for CNBLUE. 2013 ended with a BANG! and we can say that the new year already starts with a high speed as the documentary The Story of CNBLUE/NEVER STOP will be released soon. After what, CNBLUE will go back on the road to continue the world tour BLUE MOON at the end of January and go to perform in North and South America. Because yes, CNBLUE is a band that never stops!
